A Modern Take on an Ancient Tradition

Candlelit Tales was founded by sibling storytellers Aron and Sorcha Hegarty. As kids, Sorcha would tell Aron stories on long bus rides, a passion that grew into a shared love for Irish mythology and live performance. This journey began with a near-empty room above a Dublin pub in 2014, but by the fourth week, the hall outside was full. Since then, we’ve developed a uniquely expressive, naturalistic, and modern style of storytelling.

Our Philosophy

Live music is the heartbeat of all our performances, with an original score composed by talented musicians. We don’t shy away from the depth, wisdom, and richness of the original Irish tales; instead, we leaven them with humour, passion, and playfulness to enchant audiences of all ages. We believe the power of storytelling is as old as language itself, and its skills can be learned, adopted, and put into practice by anyone.

Aron Hegarty

Co-Founder & Artist

Aron Hegarty is a Dublin-based actor, storyteller, voice-over artist, yoga teacher, and workshop facilitator. He is the co-founder of Candlelit Tales, a storytelling company with over a decade of experience bringing Irish myths and folklore to life for live audiences of all ages. Aron also co-hosts the Candlelit Tales Podcast, which has amassed over 250 episodes, sharing the richness of Irish mythology with a global audience. As a storyteller and performer, Aron combines his passion for narrative and psychology to explore the depth and diversity of the human experience. His live shows, workshops, and recordings are celebrated for their ability to spark imagination and foster connection through the timeless art of storytelling.

In addition to his work with Candlelit Tales, Aron is an experienced actor represented by Lisa Richards Agency. Recently finished shooting a Walking Dead spin off called Daryl Dixon, Aron also played the role of Red Hugh O’Donnell in Brian Freil’s Making History earlier this year in the Everyman in Cork. His other notable credits include the SKY TV series Then You Run and previous roles in Game of Thrones, Vikings, and Ripper Street. He has also worked extensively in theatre, appearing in productions such as Riders to the Sea with Blue Raincoat Theatre Company and The Country Girls at The Abbey Theatre. Aron is a proud ambassador for the Gaelic Woodland Project and frequently organises Meitheals and fundraisers for the charity. You can also find Aron teaching yoga in various studios in Dublin since his training in India in 2022.

Sorcha Hegarty

Co-Founder & Storyteller

Sorcha, originally from Cork, moved to Dublin in 2000 to study English and Spanish at Trinity. After earning her degree, she spent two years in Latin America, where she worked as a translator and absorbed the rich differences in culture, attitudes, and mythologies. With a deep-seated belief in the power of cultural heritage and timeless stories, Sorcha worked with the Bard School to reintroduce Irish myth into public consciousness. This work led to her co-founding Candlelit Tales with her brother, Aron, in 2014. The company has since brought ancient mythology to pubs, theatre, and music festivals across Ireland.

In addition to reviving old tales, Sorcha is a prolific writer of new stories, including plays, short stories, and screenplays, and she is currently working on her first fantasy novel. Her short play, “The Thrill of the Chase,” was performed in Dublin’s Liberty Hall in 2013, and her children’s play, “The Voyage of Brian,” toured theatre festivals in 2014. Sorcha now works as a freelance writer, researcher, and storyteller in Dublin.
